The historic ranching community began in 1884 to feed the miners working in Telluride, 32 miles away.   It is now a fast growing bedroom community to Telluride that has retained its ranching heritage.  Norwood is a small southwestern town with 2 Doctors, a Mental Heath Clinic, a Dentist, a chiropractor, 15 Massage Therapists, a new large pre-school facility & a newly remodeled K-12 school, 3 indoor riding arenas, the San Miguel County Fairgrounds and racetrack, 5 Restaurants, 4 Bed & Breakfasts, a Dude Ranch, 4 Churches, 65 working artists and home health care for our elderly. We also have low cost regional public transportation.

From this High Mesa Plateau of 7,000 feet elevation, one can see the La Sal Mountains to the west and the San Juan's to the east.  Directly south, 11 miles is the majestic 12,500-foot peak Lone Cone Mountain.  The Town is surrounded by thousands of acres of accessible National Forest and Bureau of Land Management Land.  It is situated between Utah’s Arches National Park and Canyonlands and the nearby resort area of Telluride, Colorado.
